”A person of faith does not ask if it’s worth his while. . .to turn off one unnecessary electric light or recycle one throwaway {plastic} jar; that is indeed part of what defines him as a person of faith: the belief that little gestures are worth his while in spite of any evidence to the contrary.”
Garret Keizer
Christians for the Earth have been encouraging greening projects around the church for the past several years. These projects include recycling, compostable tableware, ceramic mugs and mug cupboard, serving Equal Exchange coffee for Fellowship Hour and other events, providing locally grown vegetables and meat at church events, beginning an energy audit, replacing incandescent lightbulbs with CFLs, and watering the lawn with recycled water.
With Huncilman Funds Christians for the Earth implemented a recycling program by providing recycling containers in all rooms with accompanying information signs. An education brochure was created and distributed and is available now in the church office. A workshop was presented by Tammy Bishop, commercial recycling staff from the City of Flagstaff. We continue to monitor this program and check with our sexton, Michelle Diarrassouba.
Compostable tableware from Recyclaholics was introduced at the ‘Tis A Gift To Be Simple workshop in 2006. It was also used and further explained at the potlucks in Vacation Church School 2006. At Step It Up Flagstaff in April 2007, we served about 130 people using compostable tableware. The Youth of the church have assisted by taking the used compostable tableware to the compost pile at New Start School after each workshop.
The Boy Scouts of troop 31 made a cupboard for ceramic cups in Rees Hall. Christians for the Earth encourage use of this cupboard for ceramic cups in fellowship hour and other events.
Equal Exchange coffee is served in Coffee Hour each Sunday as well as at special events. Christians for the Earth subsidize the cost of this coffee by paying ½.
At the back to school picnic in the fall of 2006 and at Step It Up in the spring of 2007, Christians for the Earth obtained donations of vegetables from Community Supported Agriculture and of meat from A Bar H Farms. Both the vegetables and the meat were grown in Phoenix. By using them we support local farmers and ranchers who use a fraction of the amount of fuel that is usually needed to transport food to our tables. In addition the vegetables are grown organically and the beef is pasture fed.
The Building and Grounds Team is beginning an energy audit of the church which we highly support. They are exchanging CFLs for used incandescent bulbs. Christians for the Earth hope to participate in future greening projects in the church building and grounds.
Thanks to Rosie Holden and a Huncilman Grant, the church uses recycled water from the City of Flagstaff to water much of our lawn.
