Step It Up

FEDERATED AGAIN HELPS TO STEP IT UP!

On Saturday, November 3rd, Christians For the Earth again helped to spread the message of the national Step It Up campaign.  Many of you will recall the first Flagstaff gathering we held at Federated in April that was attended by about 130 people.  The focus again was asking Congress to help us cut carbon emissions 80% by 2050.  This time we also requested two additional items.  First, that 5 million “green” jobs be created, and secondly, that no new coal power plants be built.

We met (and toured) at the new Applied Research and Development Building on the NAU campus. This building has been recognized as one of the ten most efficient such buildings in the nation (LEED Certified at the Platinum level). We learned that the President of the University has accepted the challenge of transforming the campus to be carbon neutral.  That’s great!  It will involve several changes to reduce vehicle traffic and energy consumption.

This event was a joint effort of three different groups. Campus Climate Challenge again joined us in sponsoring the event, and the third group helping put it all together was the Community and World Commission at the First Congregational Church/UCC in Flagstaff.

To see photos from the event, and a more detailed description, log on to
www.StepItUp2007.org and enter in a Flagstaff zip code when asked which report you want to see.  I highly recommend taking some time to look at some of the other 300 reports from events that occurred across the nation.

Mindful Choices for the Environment are Spiritual Acts!
